Blues and Roots Masterclass with Andrew Wheeler

January 20, 2018, 3:30pm - January 20, 2018, 5:30pm

From the Delta to Chicago and beyond – one element ties the blues together – truth. The music is a poetic vernacular form that rose up from suffering and oppression – it represents movement, change and rebirth. This interpretive blues lecture and performance takes you down dirt roads to the piney woods, from moonlit nights in the delta to an empty freight train car, along highways 49 and 61, and into the hustle and bustle of downtown Chicago just before World War II. Hailed as “genuine, authentic and engaging,” the presentation includes music steeped in Americana – from such legends as Son House, Howlin’ Wolf, Blind Willie Johnson, Robert Johnson, Bessie Smith, Elizabeth Cotton, Tommy Johnson, Charley Patton, Leroy Carr & Scrapper Blackwell, Big Bill Broonzy, Muddy Waters and more. Hear and feel these legends come alive in story and song. Optional acoustic blues jam during the last 30 minutes, covering one of the essential styles discussed. About Andrew: Andrew Wheeler has been performing and researching blues and roots music for over 20 years. He has performed across the country, from New York City to Memphis and beyond, on stages large and small - from Beale Street clubs to bistros, cafes, and orchestra pits. Wheeler is currently enrolled in the Berklee School of Music online (Class of '19), and has earned two of three possible certificates in guitar. Wheeler is a two-time Capital Region of New York State qualifier of the International Blues Challenge ('15 - solo acoustic; '16 - blues band category). This led to four engagements in '16 and '17 on Beale Street in Memphis, TN. 2016 and 2017 saw Andrew playing in NYC, NJ, PA, FL, and TN as well as a few radio appearances. Here is one from WEXT. Wheeler's goal is to pay homage to often-overlooked blues originators while passionately crafting new, meaningful forms of expression to touch your soul. Wheeler stays busy with his Blues Journey, an interactive blues performance and lecture, which he became interested in while earning his BA and MA in history. Andrew is a 2016 Patty Larkin Scholarship Award Winner at Berklee College Online. Andrew is endorsed by Rare Breed Custom Outpost Guitar Straps.

7. Our Teachers have experience with teaching students of all ages! Whether you have a 5 year old interested in learning an instrument, or you are an adult picking up an instrument for the first time…or maybe you are someone who used to play and wants to start again…we can work with everyone to ensure a positive experience at any level!

8. We offer two recitals per year at the Hubbard Interfaith Sanctuary at The College of Saint Rose. Every parent just wants to know how their child is doing and if they are really progressing. The best way for a parent to understand if their investment in lessons is really worth it, is to have their child participate in a recital. Unlike many schools in the area we do not charge for recital participation or charge admission fees. Free recitals are just our way of saying thank you to our families and students.

9. We are conveniently located off of Central Avenue in Albany and share a building with the John Keal Music Company which enables our students to have direct access to all the instruments, supplies, and books that they carry. We are also right around the corner from the Honest Weight Food Co Op…you can drop your child off for a lesson and do a little shopping while you wait!

10. We care. This may sound almost silly, but it is very true. We are invested in our students. We share with them our knowledge, we pass onto them our love of music, and we get to know each and every student that comes to our school. We want to see them succeed. We want to ensure that the study of music makes them happy and gives them the emotional and creative outlet that we all know is so important.
